Teaching has always been about far more than delivering lessons.
For me, it's about helping children discover what they're capable of.
Throughout my career as a qualified primary school teacher, I've had the privilege of supporting children with a wide range of abilities, personalities and learning needs. Every child has brought their own strengths, challenges and way of seeing the world, and every one of them has reminded me that there is no single "right" way to learn.
Some children flourish immediately.
Others need time.
Some need encouragement.
Some need reassurance.
Many simply need someone who believes in them before they begin believing in themselves.
Every Child Learns Differently
One of the biggest lessons I've learned as a teacher is that children don't struggle because they aren't capable. More often, they struggle because learning hasn't yet been presented in a way that makes sense to them. A child who feels overwhelmed by Maths may simply need practical resources and visual explanations. A reluctant reader might just need books that genuinely excite them. A child who dislikes writing may simply lack confidence rather than ability. That's why every lesson I teach is adapted to the individual child sitting in front of me. Rather than expecting children to fit into one teaching style, I adapt my teaching to fit them. This personalised approach allows children to make meaningful progress while developing confidence that stays with them long after the lesson has finished.
A Calm, Positive Learning Environment
Many children arrive feeling nervous.
Perhaps they've started believing they "aren't good at Maths."
Maybe reading has become frustrating.
Perhaps school feels overwhelming.
One of my first priorities is helping children feel comfortable.
Sessions are calm.
Supportive.
Encouraging.
Children are praised for effort as much as achievement.
Mistakes aren't something to avoid.
They're opportunities to learn.
This creates an environment where children feel safe to ask questions, try new approaches and gradually develop confidence in their own abilities.
Parents are often surprised by how quickly children begin looking forward to their tutoring sessions.
